What makes a good picture to start from?

Short answer

A good picture shows one subject, with its whole body in the frame and a little space between the legs, arms, wings or wheels. Clean drawings, renders and clear photos all work, and you can check your own picture for free before you pay.

In more detail

  • One subject. A single character or object, not a group or a busy scene.
  • The whole body. Feet, tail, wings and ears inside the frame. Bake3D cannot build what it cannot see.
  • Gaps between parts. Limbs that touch in the picture can join in the model. Leave space between the arms and the body, and between the legs.
  • A plain background. The background is removed for you, but a busy one can leave bits behind.
  • Clear shapes. Strong outlines and even light help. Heavy painted shadows can turn into bumps.

Clear beats big. About 1,000 pixels on the long side is plenty. Bake3D takes PNG, JPEG or WebP files up to 12 MB.

You can add up to 4 views of the same subject in the same pose, such as a side and a back view. Then the model guesses less about the sides it cannot see. Extra views cost 10 credits, once per bake.

If your character is running, sitting or has crossed limbs, Bake3D first makes a picture of it in a resting pose that is easy to rig. This step is included in the price. Pictures with nudity or sexual content are turned down before any credits are used, and pictures of real people need their consent.

The free readiness check tells you what Bake3D will build, which parts will move, anything to watch for and the exact price. You get 3 checks a day with a free account.
