Free tools / FBX viewer

FBX viewer.

Check an FBX before you import it into Unity, Unreal Engine or Blender. See the mesh and every bone, play each animation take, and read the triangles, textures and size. The file stays on your computer.

Specification

What this tool does

Reads binary and text FBX files with the three.js FBX loader in your browser. It shows meshes, skins and bones, plays each animation take, uses textures packed in the file or dropped beside it, and reads the unit scale to give the size in metres.

Inputs
Binary FBX, version 6.4 (6400) or newer
Text FBX, version 7.0 or newer
Texture images dropped with it (PNG, JPEG, TGA)
Outputs
Model details on the page
PNG snapshot of the view
Controls
Turn, zoom and pan by mouse, touch or keyboard
Wireframe, see-through, skeleton, textures and grid
Animation take, play, pause, scrub, speed and loop
Up axis: Y or Z
Limits
64 MiB per file and 256 MiB per drop
Only the first layer of a layered animation or texture is used
Some material settings from 3D apps have no match in three.js

Privacy: Files are parsed, previewed and written back inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account is needed and no generation credits are spent.

Check an FBX before you import it

FBX is Autodesk’s 3D format. Unity, Unreal Engine, Maya and 3ds Max all use it, and Blender can read and write it. An FBX can hold meshes, materials, bones, skin weights and animations.

Importing a big FBX into a game engine takes time. If the rig or the motion is wrong, you find out late. This viewer opens the file in your browser first. You can see every bone, play each animation and read the size in a few seconds.

How to view an FBX file

  1. Drop the .fbx file on the box above, or press Choose files. Binary and text FBX both work, up to 64 MiB.
  2. If the textures are separate image files, drop them together with the FBX. Images packed inside the FBX load on their own.
  3. Drag to turn the model, scroll or pinch to zoom, and right-drag or use two fingers to move it.
  4. Pick an animation take in the panel. Play it, slow it down or step through it frame by frame.
  5. Press the bone button, or the B key, to see the skeleton through the body.

The file is read in this browser tab. It is never uploaded, and you do not need an Autodesk app.

Units and size

FBX files store their unit in a setting called the unit scale. A value of 1 means one unit is one centimetre, the FBX default. The viewer reads this setting and shows the size in metres and in centimetres. If a file has no unit setting, the viewer uses centimetres and says so in the panel.

This is the reason models often jump 100 times in size between apps. Some apps count in metres and some in centimetres. If the size in the panel looks right but your engine shows something else, look for a unit or scale option in the engine’s import settings. In Unity it is called Convert Units.

Animation takes

FBX calls each animation a take, or an animation stack. The viewer lists every take with its length. The three.js loader reads the first layer of each take, so a take built from several layers plays only its first one.

Some FBX files hold a skeleton and its motion but no mesh. The viewer then shows the bones on their own, so you can still watch the motion.

What the viewer cannot show

  • Some material settings. Shaders made in Maya or 3ds Max have no exact match in three.js. The viewer shows the base color and the texture maps it can read.
  • PSD and other unusual textures. The viewer reads PNG, JPEG, WebP and TGA images. Save other images as PNG.
  • Very old files. The loader reads binary FBX from version 6.4 and text FBX from version 7.0. Save older files again from a newer app.
  • Cameras and lights. They are left out. The viewer lights every model the same way.

Try the sample

The sample is our fox, turned into an FBX in your browser by our free GLB to FBX converter. The FBX is 3.99 MB. It has 60,000 triangles, 29 bones, the base color texture packed inside and three takes: Walk, Tail wag and Look around. Its unit scale is 1, so it reads 145 cm tall. That is the same height the GLB gives in metres.

Common questions

Do I need Autodesk software to open an FBX file?

No. This viewer reads FBX files in your web browser with the three.js FBX loader. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.

Why is my FBX 100 times too big or too small?

The FBX was saved in one unit and opened as another. Check the size row in the panel. It uses the unit stored in the file. Then set the matching unit or scale when you import it into your app.

Which FBX versions work?

Binary FBX from version 6.4 and text FBX from version 7.0. Almost every FBX made in the last ten years is newer than that. If an older file will not open, save it again as a newer FBX.

Why are my FBX textures missing?

The FBX points to image files that were not dropped with it. Drop the images together with the FBX. The viewer matches them by file name, even when the FBX stores a full path from another computer.

Can I convert an FBX after checking it?

Yes. Our free FBX to GLB converter keeps the rig, blend shapes and every take in a GLB, and the FBX to OBJ converter writes the static shape. Have an old Collada file instead? DAE to FBX turns it into an FBX you can open here. Our GLB to FBX guide explains both directions.

What did we test?

In Chrome, we opened three files. The sample fox FBX made by our converter showed 29 bones, three takes and its texture, and read 145 cm tall. A small text FBX wedge with no unit setting showed 4 triangles and the note that centimetres were assumed. A text FBX with five bones, one 2 second take and no mesh showed the bones moving on their own. Automated tests read the sample FBX back and check its bones, its takes and their lengths. Autodesk owns the FBX format. Its FBX SDK page links to the official developer documentation.
