# Free AI 3D character makers: what is really free

Free AI 3D character makers compared by what you can really download and use: Meshy, Tripo, Sloyd, VRoid Studio, Ready Player Me and Bake3D, checked 2026.

## Short answer

Few free AI 3D character makers are free all the way. Meshy's free plan gives 10 Lite downloads a month that you must credit. Tripo's free models are public and not for business. Sloyd's free plan is for personal use. VRoid Studio is fully free but makes anime-style people only, and Ready Player Me shut down in January 2026. Bake3D's demo, picture check and four rigged CC BY models are free, and your own characters start at $5.

## How we checked

We read each tool's own pricing page, help center, terms and license pages on 9 October 2026, and link them under Sources. We did not make a character in every tool, so this compares what each free plan allows, not how good the characters look. Bake3D facts come from our own product: the free demo, the free picture check and the four free models are live on our site.

"Free" can mean four different things. A character maker can be free to try, free to download from, free to use in work you sell, or free to rig and animate. Very few are all four. The free plan is often a demo with a download limit or a license that rules out business use.

That is not a trick. Making a 3D model with AI costs the company real money each time. But you should know the rules before you build a character you cannot take with you.

If you want something that moves right now, our [free 3D models](https://bake3d.ai/free-3d-models) page has four rigged, animated characters you can download and use, even in work you sell. You can also play rigged characters, and direct them with your own words, in the free [demo](https://bake3d.ai/demo).

## Free AI 3D character makers compared

Here is what each free plan allows, from each tool's own pages, checked on 9 October 2026.

| Tool | What goes in | Free download? | Business use on the free plan? | Paid from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meshy | A picture or text | 10 a month, Meshy 6 Lite models only | Yes, if you credit Meshy (CC BY 4.0) | $20 a month |
| Tripo | A picture or text | 15 exports | No, free models are public and non-commercial | $20 a month |
| Sloyd | A picture or text, 1 a day | Community models only | No, personal use | $15 a month |
| VRoid Studio | Sliders and drawing, no picture | Yes, as VRM | Yes | Free |
| Avatar SDK | A selfie, or presets | Your first character | Not stated | Credits per character |
| Hero Forge | Sliders in the browser | No. An STL is $7.99 | Check its terms | $7.99 per STL |
| Canva | Text | A PNG or JPG picture, not a 3D file | Under Canva's terms | Canva Pro |
| Ready Player Me | Closed | No | No | Closed in January 2026 |
| Bake3D (ours) | A picture or text | 4 free rigged CC BY models; your own from $5 | Yes: free models with credit, bakes with bought credits | $5 pack |

And here is which ones rig and animate, and what each one is best for.

| Tool | Rigs non-humanoid bodies? | Motion from text? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meshy | Four legs, plus a beta rig for others | Yes, for biped rigs | Trying AI on your own picture |
| Tripo | Yes, seven body types | Not confirmed in its docs | Testing creature rigs |
| Sloyd | No rig on the free plan | Paid plans, humanoids | Game-style props and characters |
| VRoid Studio | No, anime-style people only | No | Anime avatars and VTubing |
| Avatar SDK | No, people only | No | A 3D version of yourself |
| Hero Forge | No rig. Print only | No | Tabletop miniatures |
| Canva | No 3D model at all | No | Pictures that look 3D |
| Ready Player Me | No | No | None now |
| Bake3D (ours) | Yes, any body it builds | Yes, free on the demo, 3 a day | Animals, creatures and machines that move |

## How we checked

On 9 October 2026 we read each tool's pricing page, help center, terms and license pages. Every fact links to its source at the end of this page. Where a company's pages disagree, we say so. For Ready Player Me, we read the news of its sale and tried its website, which did not load.

We did not make a character in every tool. So this guide compares what each free plan allows, not how good the characters look.

For Bake3D, we checked what any visitor can do today without paying: the demo, the free check of a picture, and the four free models. We made those models with Bake3D, and the [free 3D models](https://bake3d.ai/free-3d-models) page lists their triangles, bones and clips, measured from the files.

## Meshy

Meshy's free plan gives 100 credits a month, with no card needed. You can make models from a picture or text, rig them and try 22 ready animations. Meshy's library page says those 22 are included on every plan, even the free one.

**The catch.** Its help center says free users get 10 downloads a month, of Meshy 6 Lite models only. Models made with Meshy 6 or 7 need a paid plan to download. Free models are licensed CC BY 4.0, so you may use them for business only if you credit Meshy. Pro is $20 a month. Our [Meshy AI review](https://bake3d.ai/guides/meshy-ai-review) has the full picture.

## Tripo

Tripo's free plan gives 200 credits a month, which Tripo says is about 13 models, one at a time.

**The catch.** Its pricing page says free models are public and for non-commercial use, with 15 exports. A Tripo blog post says free models are CC BY 4.0, but the pricing page says non-commercial, so plan on paying if you sell your work. Pro is $20 a month for 3,000 credits. Our [Meshy vs Tripo](https://bake3d.ai/guides/meshy-vs-tripo) guide compares the two free plans side by side.

## Sloyd

Sloyd makes game-style models. Its free Guest plan lets you make an AI model from a picture or text each day.

**The catch.** The pricing page lists a personal-use license on the free plan and export of community models only. Rigging and text to animation start with Plus, at $15 a month, and its rigging is for humanoid characters in a T-pose or A-pose.

## VRoid Studio

VRoid Studio from pixiv is free for anyone, on Windows, macOS and iPad. You build an anime-style person with sliders and draw the hair and clothes yourself. It exports VRM, a format made for avatars in VTubing apps and games.

**The catch.** There is not really one. Its help center says models you make can be used for business. Items made by other creators keep their own rules, and you may not build your own character maker app from VRoid parts without a separate license. It is not an AI tool, though. It does not read a picture, and it only makes human characters.

## Avatar SDK (MetaPerson)

Avatar SDK's MetaPerson creator turns one selfie into a full-body, rigged 3D person. It exports GLB, glTF and FBX.

**The catch.** Its page says your first character and its default export are free. After that, you pay per character with credits. We did not find the license for free characters on the page we read. It makes people only.

## Hero Forge and Canva

These two show up near the top of searches for a free 3D character maker, but they do different jobs.

- **Hero Forge** lets you design a fantasy miniature in your browser for free. To print it at home, you buy the STL file, at $7.99 for one character. Its page says the files are not rigged for animation.
- **Canva's** 3D character creator turns a prompt into a picture that looks 3D. Its page says you download the result as a PNG or JPG. That is an image, not a 3D model you can turn around, rig or put in a game.

## Ready Player Me

Ready Player Me was a popular free avatar maker for games. Netflix bought the company in December 2025. TechCrunch reported that its services, including its online avatar creator, would wind down on 31 January 2026. When we tried readyplayer.me on 9 October 2026, the site did not load. If an old tutorial sends you there, pick another tool from this page.

## Bake3D

Bake3D is our own tool, so read this part with that in mind. Here is what is free and what is not.

**Free, with no catch:**

- **The demo.** Play a rigged fox, robot, old man and T. rex in your browser, with no account.
- **Direct it.** Type a motion for a demo character and the engine writes it for that body. A free account gets 3 a day.
- **The readiness check.** Upload your own picture. Bake3D says what it will build, which parts will move and the exact price. You get 3 checks a day.
- **Four free models.** The fox, robot, old man and T. rex are on our [free 3D models](https://bake3d.ai/free-3d-models) page as GLB files with every clip and FBX files with the walk, under CC BY 4.0. You can use them in work you sell, if you credit Bake3D.
- **Browser tools.** The [online 3D viewer](https://bake3d.ai/tools/3d-viewer) and the converters run in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

*Figure: The four free models, each caught mid-walk. All four are rigged and animated, and free to use with credit under CC BY 4.0. Rendered in Blender from the GLB files on our free models page.* ([picture](https://bake3d.ai/guides/free-3d-models-four-walking.webp))

**Not free:** your own characters. There are no free credits. A rigged character at Standard quality is 65 credits, and packs start at $5 for 80 credits, which covers one character with credits to spare. Characters made with bought credits come with a commercial license. If you are not happy with your first character, the first-character guarantee refunds your first pack in full, if you ask within 14 days. See [pricing](https://bake3d.ai/pricing) for the full list.

**The limits:** Bake3D does not rig a model you upload. It moves the body, not the face. It makes 3D files, not a video. The [3D character maker](https://bake3d.ai/3d-character-maker) page shows the whole workflow.

## Other free options

- **Mixamo** from Adobe is free with an Adobe ID. It rigs and animates human characters you upload, but its FAQ says it works on two-legged humanoids only. For other bodies, see our [Mixamo alternatives](https://bake3d.ai/guides/mixamo-alternatives).
- **3D AI Studio** gives some free credits when you sign up, and its pricing page says commercial use is allowed on every plan. Rigging is on paid plans.
- **Krikey AI** gives 20 credits once, for animated avatar videos. FBX export needs a paid plan.
- **Open models** like Microsoft's TRELLIS.2 are free under the MIT license, but you run them on your own computer with a strong NVIDIA graphics card, at least 24 GB of memory. Tencent's Hunyuan3D 2.1 license does not cover the EU, the UK or South Korea. Neither one makes a rig.

## Read the license before you build

Before you spend hours on a free character, check three things on the tool's own pages:

1. **Can you download it?** Some free plans let you make a character but not take it away.
2. **Can you use it in work you sell?** "Personal use" and "non-commercial" mean no. "CC BY 4.0" means yes, if you credit the maker in the way the [license](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) asks.
3. **Is it public?** Some free plans publish your models for anyone to see and reuse.

If you plan to sell what you make, our guide on [selling 3D models](https://bake3d.ai/guides/sell-3d-models) covers the marketplace rules. ## Questions

### Is there a free AI 3D character maker?

Yes, but almost every one has a limit. Meshy and Tripo give free monthly credits with download and license limits. Sloyd gives one AI model a day for personal use. Avatar SDK lets you export your first character free. VRoid Studio is fully free, but you build the character by hand, with no AI picture input.

### What is the best free AI 3D character maker in 2026?

For a human or anime avatar, VRoid Studio is free with no catch. For trying AI on your own picture, Meshy's free plan rigs and animates and allows 10 Lite downloads a month. For a rigged animal, creature or robot you can use today, Bake3D's four free CC BY models are ready to download.

### Can I use free AI 3D characters commercially?

Sometimes. Meshy's free models are CC BY 4.0, so business use is fine if you credit Meshy. Tripo's and Sloyd's free plans do not allow business use. VRoid Studio models can be used commercially. Bake3D's free models are CC BY 4.0, and characters you bake with bought credits come with a commercial license.

### Is Ready Player Me still available?

No. Netflix bought Ready Player Me in December 2025, and TechCrunch reported that its services, including its avatar creator, would wind down on 31 January 2026. When we tried readyplayer.me on 9 October 2026, the site did not load.

### Is VRoid Studio free for commercial use?

Yes. VRoid Studio is free to download for Windows, macOS and iPad, and its help center says models you make with it can be used for business. Watch for items made by other creators, which have their own rules. You also may not build your own character maker app from its parts without a separate license.

### Where can I get a free rigged and animated 3D character?

Bake3D's free 3D models page has a fox, a robot, an old man and a T. rex, each rigged and animated, as GLB and FBX under CC BY 4.0. Mixamo gives free rigs and motions for human characters you upload. Meshy's free plan rigs its own models, with 22 free animations.
